Become a Volunteer

Becoming a volunteer starts with your decision to get involved.

Volunteer Orientations

If you’re not sure how to get involved the best first step would be to attend a Volunteer Orientation.

Join us on one particular Saturday each month (usually the first) at 1:00 PM. We’ll have the coffee on — all you have to do is show up.

We’ll get an opportunity to tell you what we’re all about including what we do and how we do it, and you’ll get a chance to ask questions, see the space and hear about the basic rules of the space.

While it’s not 100% necessary to attend an Orientation it *is* recommended.

The WRENCH encourages volunteers of all skill levels to join in.

If you’d rather just dive in…

Join us on a Thursday for Public Open Shop or a Saturday for Volunteer Shop!
Come on down, say you want to volunteer, and we’ll get you doing something. There’s always something to do.

Activities you may perform as a Volunteer

  • Taking apart bikes to save components
  • Fixing bikes
  • Teaching people how to fix bikes
  • Sorting parts
  • Patching tubes
  • Bringing bikes back to life – getting bike parts unstuck
  • Removing pedals, twisting handlebars, and wiggling seats on bikes before storage
  • Removing old tires from wheels
  • Taking apart old wheels to salvage spokes and nipples
  • Dishes!
  • And many other things

Donate Bikes or Parts

The WRENCH does what it can to save bikes from the Brady Road Landfill. If you or someone you know have spare bikes (of any kind) or parts at home you can very easily bring them down during Public Open Shop or Volunteer shop each Thursday and Saturday. We’ll do everything we can do ensure bikes are reused or recycled appropriately.

Children’s bicycles will be given away at one of our Summer Bike Bazaars, The Cycle of Giving, or to parents and kids who come down to the shop. Adult bicycles will be repaired and given away to volunteers or taken apart to live again as part of another bicycle, or perhaps fixed up and sold second-hand for cost recovery.

Bikes and parts to be donated can be brought to any Public Open Shop (Thursdays from 12-5:30 PM) or Volunteer Shop (Saturdays 2-4:30 PM).

Want to donate when we’re not open? Give us a call to make other arrangements: 204 296 3389.

Donate Funds

You can donate funds directly by putting some money or a cheque (made out to “The WRENCH”) in the donation box at the shop or via mail.

If you would rather donate electronically we accept donations the following online services.

By Donating an old Vehicle that you were going to send to the scrapyard anyways, The WRENCH will receive a good portion of the proceeds.

Donating your old car is a poetic and a literal way of contributing towards free bicycle education in Winnipeg.

The Cycle of Giving (COG)

The Cycle of Giving is a 24-hour Kids’ Bike Building Marathon that happens every December. Over 150 volunteers gather in one space to build as many bicycles for kids as possible in a 24-hour period.

Most of the bikes have been salvaged from the Brady Road Landfill, donated by people like you, and some come from the Headingly Correctional Facility having been fixed up by men in rehabilitation.

In 2017 the Cycle of Giving will be:

Saturday December 2nd to Sunday December 3rd
from 12PM (Noon) to 12pm (Noon)

at Orioles Community Centre (444 Burnell St)

Every year, over 350 bicycles are built up and delivered to children at family centres, day cares and community centres around Winnipeg. Help us beat our record by signing up to be volunteer CoG!

What can I do as a Volunteer at the Cycle of Giving?

  • Fix bikes as a Mechanic
  • Check bikes over as Quality Control
  • Clean bikes as they come off the line
  • Assist in the kitchen making food and snacks for volunteers
  • Be a friendly face at the front door and help folks get settled in
  • Decorate christmas cards to go on the finished bikes
  • Help with Setup or Tear Down before or after the event

Stay tuned as Christmas 2017 Approaches for more info or email to inquire further.
